Iryna Zarutska
The Person
Iryna Zarutska was a 23-year-old artist and refugee who had recently immigrated to the United States to escape the war in her home country of Ukraine. Born in Kyiv, she was a talented creator who earned a diploma in art and restoration and loved sculpting and designing unique clothing. After spending months living in a bomb shelter with her family, she moved to North Carolina in 2022, eventually settling in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood. Iryna was known for her radiant smile, her love for animals, and her incredible determination; she became fluent in English in a very short time and was working at a local pizzeria while attending community college classes to build a new life.
The Case
On the evening of August 22, 2025, Iryna was commuting home from work on the LYNX Blue Line light rail in Charlotte. While she seated she was attacked from behind in an unprovoked stabbing. She was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, a man with a lengthy criminal history and previous psychiatric crises, was apprehended minutes later on the station platform. The case drew national attention to public transit safety and the local justice system.
